Gearbox Sizing & Service Factor Calculator

A gearbox rated for 500Nm is not guaranteed to survive a 500Nm load in every application. Use this tool to calculate the true required Nominal Torque (T2N) based on your dynamic load profile and duty cycle.

Service Factor (fs) Calculator
Determine the required gearbox nominal torque based on AGMA/DIN standards for dynamic load applications.

Enter the calculated steady-state torque required by your payload or motor.

Required Gearbox Nominal Torque (T2N)
100Nm

You must select a gearbox with a catalog Nominal Torque (T2N) greater than or equal to 100 Nm to guarantee long-term survival in this application.

Warning: The E-Stop Factor

This calculator provides the continuous nominal torque requirement. However, for robotic and AGV applications, you must also verify the Acceleration / Shock Torque (T2B). If your robot experiences frequent emergency stops, the instantaneous shock torque may exceed 500% of nominal.

Why the Service Factor (fs) Matters

In industrial automation and robotics, the catalogue "Nominal Torque" (T2N) represents the maximum torque a gearbox can transmit continuously under ideal, uniform conditions (uniform load, no shock, low operating hours).

Real-world applications are rarely ideal. A gearbox driving a smooth conveyor belt experiences vastly different stresses than a gearbox driving a heavy welding positioner that starts, stops, and absorbs emergency shock loads 24 hours a day.

How to use the output:

  • Calculated Required Torque: When browsing gearbox catalogues (such as Flender, SEW, or RobotizedGearbox OEM equivalents), you must select a model where the catalog Nominal Torque is greater than or equal to this calculated value.
  • Motor Matching: Ensure your servo motor's continuous stall torque, multiplied by the gear ratio, does not exceed the gearbox's rated nominal torque.
  • Safety Margin: A higher service factor increases the physical size and cost of the gearbox but exponentially increases bearing life (L10h) and gear teeth fatigue resistance.
