How Gear Ratios Work

A gearbox ratio represents the relationship between the input shaft (driven by the engine) and the output shaft (driving the wheels). A ratio of 3.500:1 means the engine turns 3.5 times for every 1 rotation of the transmission output shaft.

Early 01E models featured a tight-tolerance 1-2 shift collar. Over time, it wears down and leads to notchy or impossible shifting into 1st or 2nd gear. Mitigation: Upgrading to modern composite synchros and an updated hub/collar assembly is common during specialist rebuilds, but the exact parts list should follow gearbox inspection results.

Torque Claims & Launching

Do not use generic 450 Nm or 600+ HP internet claims as a procurement rating. Launch technique, tire grip, shock load, bearing condition, oiling, and rebuild quality can change gearbox risk faster than the ratio selection itself.

Can I swap 01E gear ratios between different codes?
